The Babylonians in particular had a long tradition of watching for eclipses and started the practice of using them, along with other techniques, to forecast significant political, economic and social events for their kingdoms.

The fear of eclipses was in fact one of earliest drives in the development of astrology. Since then, we have inherited from our tradition a wealth of information about the use of eclipse charts in political and mundane forecasting.
