Using Astrology

The articles in this section are focused on techniques for interpretation and how those techniques are applied. This includes approaches from different types of astrological practice. It also includes questions that astrologers find themselves confronted with when they select a particular technique.

The "Mayan Calendar" is the popular name for a complex organization of time, number, astronomy, and astrology created and employed by the Maya (and probably some of their predecessors) in ancient Mesoamerica (central and southern Mexico and northern Central America). Archaeologists and historians of Mesoamerican civilization generally refer to this calendar as the Long Count. The Long Count has three elements that are shared with the Western Christian calendar; a base date, a means of grouping large periods of time, and an astrological component.

Clara Barton

In this essay I want to demonstrate how the traditional system of essential dignites can be used to add quite a bit of detail and nuance to the interpretation of a chart.

Traditional astrology uses five different essential dignities. There are the major dignities, rulership and exaltation, and their corresponding debilities, detriment and fall. Modern astrology still has these dignities, although they are often not widely recognized or used.

In addition, there are three minor dignities, named triplicity, term and face. Each has a different meaning and different level of control.

For our example, I want to look at the chart of Clara Barton. She is most famous as the founder of the American Red Cross, and did extensive work in field hospitals during the Civil War. In addition to that, Clara Barton also did extensive work in public education, and also became a major spokesperson for the women's suffrage movement.

The Sun and the Moon have been known as the two Lights for a very long time. In Hellenistic astrology, it was advantageous for the Sun and the Moon to have attending planets, just as any earthly royalty should have a court. Early on, it was recognized that the cycle of this pair was extremely important.

Jaimini Astrology has become the second most widely used Vedic Astrology system in use in the Western world, thanks largely to the efforts of Mr. K. N. Rao, P. S. Sastri and others to explain and disseminate this unique astrological system.

This article will illustrate the use of Jaimini astrology for analyzing the spiritual potential of individuals through use of the Jaimini karakas (indicators) in the chart and through the use of Upagrahas ("little planets") in the context of Jaimini interpretation principles.

Astrology uses two types of planetary motion: sidereal (from sider- the Greek word for star) and synodic (from sunodik√≥s - a Greek word referring to a meeting or assembly). A sidereal return is when a planetary body reaches the same position in the sky relative to a fixed star. A synodic return is relative to a conjunction with its own previous position or a return to a conjunction with another planetary body).

Astrologers can mark important periods in an individual's life by looking at times when synodic returns coincide. This article examines the synodic return of double outer planet transits measured by the time interval between the successive conjunctions of any two planets. If one outer planet moves to aspect a natal planet, angle or close network of planets (a group of planets that are close to the same degree regardless of sign), then two at once marks a particularly important life period.

I contend here that our astrological understanding of Scorpio and Pisces has been compromised by attributing to those signs qualities that belong to the outer planets Pluto and Neptune.

We have taken Scorpio and Pisces too far out of the realm of everyday life and brought it too close to the extreme and the supernatural, and usually this is not where people live. There is a gap between what the books tell us about Scorpio and Pisces and the lives of our clients. Most people with prominent Scorpio are not obsessive or focused on death but are self- contained but engaged with life. Most people with prominent Pisces are usually interested in the world around them, even its details, and respond to life in many different ways.
